In Wheel Cleaning

wheel care cleaning best practicesYou spent a lot time researching the ideal wheels for your car; you made sure they were perfect for your needs and that they looked good while they were doing it. After going through all of the trouble to find top of the line, beautiful wheels, you’ll want them to look that way for a long time, and the best way to do that, is to clean your wheels properly. Here’s a wheel care cleaning guide to ensure the health and longevity of your wheels.

How to Clean Your Wheels

People typically like to wash their cars at home on a hot, dry day, but when it comes to cleaning your wheels, the best option is milder weather, preferably in the shade if at all possible. This is because your wheel surface should be cool as you clean it. Make sure you have the proper tools to clean your wheel, i.e. a soft bristle wheel brush or wash mitt, if you prefer. If you don’t have a specific wheel care cleaner, use plain soap and water to wash the wheel.

Spray the wheel with the cleaner at the bottom of the wheel and work your way up. This prevents the concentrated product running down the face of the wheel and drying. Not properly washing off the product or allowing it dry on the face of the wheel can potentially damage the wheel’s clear coat or paint job. Rinse your wheel thoroughly, and dry completely. After you’ve cleaned your wheel, apply a sealer or wax to the surface of the wheel to further protect your wheel.

Special Considerations for Different Types of Wheels

If your wheels have been powder coated, are polished or uncoated, are chrome, or anything in between, there are certain types of cleaners that work best for different types of wheels. Typically, chrome wheels require a low pH cleaner that are usually labeled with “chrome wheel cleaner.” Neutral pH cleaners are usually used on painted, multi-finish, or polished wheels and are usually labeled  “aluminum wheel cleaner.” If you’re unsure about the finish of your wheel or the cleaner that’s best suited for it, contact a wheel care expert like Wheelkraft NW who can make recommendations specifically for your wheels.
